The need for competence Competence Support

The desire to experience oneself as capable of realizing abilities, plans, and aims, which are not always easy to achieve, and feel a sense of efficacy. Competence support is typified by teacher behaviours such as providing optimal challenges, immediate and non-evaluative feedback, assistance in coping with failure, teaching learning strategies, and conveying messages regarding students’ ability to succeed (Deci & Ryan, 2000).
